Primebook is a Made-in-India budget laptop brand that aims to provide affordable devices for students and everyday users. On paper, it looks promising — low price, decent battery, 4G option, and a laptop form factor. However, after using it, one thing becomes crystal clear: the heavy reliance on Android-based PrimeOS is the biggest reason Primebook will find it very hard to succeed in the long run.
The Core Problem: Android is Not a Laptop OS
PrimeOS is a customized version of Android made to look like a desktop. While it works okay for very basic tasks (browsing, YouTube, WhatsApp, light apps), it has fundamental limitations that make the Primebook feel like an oversized tablet rather than a real laptop.
App Ecosystem Limitations: Not every software can run properly on Android. Many professional tools, coding IDEs, engineering software, advanced office suites, and desktop applications simply don’t exist in Android version or run poorly. On the other hand, Linux supports thousands of native desktop applications. Almost any software you need for studies, development, or work can run on Linux — either natively or through compatibility layers. This is a massive advantage Linux has over Android.
Performance & Multitasking: Android was designed for phones. Even with desktop customizations, multitasking, window management, and overall smoothness suffer. Users frequently report lag, especially when running multiple apps or using external monitors. Linux is much more efficient on the same hardware. It can deliver better performance, longer battery life, and true desktop-grade multitasking.
File Management & Productivity: Android’s file system and desktop experience are still limited. Proper file handling, external drive support, and advanced workflows are clunky. Linux offers powerful, flexible file management and is built for real productivity.
Developer & Student Friendliness: For coding, programming, or engineering students, Android is painful. Linux is the industry standard for development. You get full access to compilers, terminals, servers, and tools that students actually need.
Advantages of Switching to Linux (Huge Benefits)
If Primebook switches to a custom Linux-based PrimeOS (built from scratch or heavily customized), here are the clear advantages:
True Desktop Experience: Proper window management, virtual desktops, keyboard shortcuts, and extended display support via HDMI — exactly what users expect from a laptop.
Better Performance & Efficiency: Linux is lightweight. On the same MediaTek hardware, it would run faster, use less RAM, and give longer battery life.
Vast Software Compatibility: Almost every software can run on Linux. From LibreOffice to professional tools, development environments, and even Windows apps via compatibility layers. Android simply cannot match this.
Customization & Control: Primebook would have full control over updates, security, and features. No dependency on Google’s Android rules.
Easier to Build & Maintain Long-Term: Linux makes it very easy to build a simple, custom OS. With help from AI tools (like Claude or others), a small team can create and maintain a lightweight, optimized system much more effectively than constantly hacking Android for desktop use.
Better for Indian Market: Students and developers in India would love a Linux-based Primebook. It would position the brand as a serious, future-proof option instead of a “cheap Android laptop”.
In short, Linux would turn Primebook from a “glorified tablet” into a real, capable laptop.
Disadvantages of Linux (Being Honest)
It can have a steeper learning curve for absolute beginners who only know Android.
Some mobile-specific apps might need alternatives or web versions.
Initial driver optimization for specific hardware takes effort (but Primebook can do this once).
These disadvantages are manageable and far outweighed by the long-term benefits.
Why Primebook Will Struggle If They Stick with Android
The budget laptop market is competitive. Chromebooks, Windows laptops, and even other Android experiments exist. By staying locked in the Android ecosystem, Primebook is limiting itself to basic use cases. Users who need real productivity will eventually move away. The repeated complaints about lag, poor multitasking, limited apps, and missing features (like proper extended display) will keep hurting the brand’s reputation.
Primebook has the potential to be a strong Indian success story. But unless they seriously consider moving to a Linux-based system (or at least make the current software much lighter and better optimized), they will remain stuck in the “cheap but limited” category.
Final Verdict:
Primebook hardware has promise, but the Android-based PrimeOS is holding it back badly. Switching to Linux would be a game-changer — better performance, broader software support, true laptop experience, and easier future development.
I really hope the team reconsiders this. India needs strong local tech brands, but they must choose the right foundation for long-term success.
They should not now change the whole software unless they make it more and more light through updates and integrate Linux later, like Chrome OS, and this will be a smart move, but I’m worried about the delayed updates. On the other hand, Windows and Chromebook get updates in a couple of weeks with the latest security patches, but the software sector of the company is not taking the software side seriously.
So please, team, this is a humble request to work on updates and enable us more features with the system with more features.
Waiting for a reply and update too!!
Hey, we genuinely value every suggestion from our users. Since we receive a wide range of feedback, we prioritize and roll out improvements in phases rather than all at once.
Please be assured that our software team is actively working on new features, optimizations, and improvements. While we can’t share the details just yet, we’re confident you’ll like what’s coming. We also aim to release updates regularly, typically around once a month.
We truly appreciate your patience and continued support. There are several exciting things in the works, and we can’t wait to share them with you soon!
